About Us

Man Beside COX Banner — Penn Valley, PA — Cox & Co Tree Service

Our Background

John Cox founded Cox and Company in 1984. John grew up in Chappaqua New York. He graduated from Horace Greely High School, studied mechanical engineering at Rochester Institute of Technology and landscape architecture at Temple University.  While growing up he enjoyed many outdoor sports including rock climbing. The skill transfer to tree climbing was natural for him and led to a very rewarding occupation for over 5 decades. Since moving to Philadelphia in 1979, he has gotten a birds eye view from the top of many historic trees in our area!

John supports and volunteers with many local organizations including Valley Forge National Historical Park, Tyler Arboretum, Willistown Land Trust, Friends of the Wissahickon, and Darby Friends Meeting.  John served as a board member on the Limerick Planning Commission, Riverbend Environmental Education Center, and Aton Forest.

He manages a family forest in Norfolk Ct. Established in 1891 on land formally used for producing charcoal. It was planted in 1911 by his Great Grandfather, Grandfather, along with guidance from the then newly formed Yale School of Forestry.  Sharing maple syrup from the forest brings him great joy!
